Today we’re releasing an update to Ambassador Cloud focused on helping you connect your tools, technologies, and teams in order to deliver your cloud native applications faster and with less bugs. This year, as Docker celebrates its ninth birthday and the CNCF approaches its seven year mark, the landscape of cloud native tools to empower your workflow is more expansive than ever before. As an industry, we’ve diverged in the tools that exist, but you and your teams shouldn’t need to hand-roll your solution every time. PaaS’ may be too limiting, locking down your workflow; you and your teams need the balance and flexibility to choose the right tools for the job at hand, but also the ability to enforce accepted fundamentals.

The features in this release are targeted at these same pains that we’ve experienced while building Ambassador Cloud, Edge Stack, and Telepresence. We believe that today’s release will move your teams in the same direction as we have — allowing you to create paths paved with your tools, technologies and teams as flagstones.

Docker Extension for Telepresence — Enabling easy microservice testing, even at scale

For the tools you’re already using, Docker has recently announced their preview of Docker Extensions and Telepresence will be one of the first available. This allows you to create intercepts directly from Docker Desktop, where you’re able to develop, test and debug your Kubernetes services locally without needing to even open a command prompt. Docker has proven to be the key flagstone of the cloud native paved path and Telepresence is a natural extension to Docker Desktop.

We use Docker and Telepresence daily in our inner and outer development loops, and are very excited to be bringing this seamless integration between these two great products to our users.

Service Catalog v2 — View, manage, and deploy all of your Services in One Place

For the technologies you’re already using, we’ve simplified the service catalog page of the Ambassador Cloud allowing you to see all of your services in a single glance. The power of the developer control plane — being able to see the status of all of your services, intercept them, or rollout to different environments — has been made even more powerful. As the number of services in our development, staging and production environments has grown, granting the ability to visualize and manage all our services at a glance.

For each of your applications, see if there is an intercept or rollout in progress, as well as whether all of the versions of your services are the same across each environment or have drifted. You can also combine your services into groups on the services pages, which allows you to create a succinct view of all of the services that they care about and their statuses.

Deployment Previews — Code it, Share it, Empower your Outer Development Loop

For your teams, we’ve shipped a new feature called Deployment Previews that are automatically added to each pull request. Empower your entire team as they review your features in Github. Built on top of the CI/CD tooling that you’re already using and Telepresence at its core, Deployment Previews allow each member of your team to see the changes that you made running in your environments.

We’ve found this to be a particularly painful point, waiting for developer teammates to pull your branches and build your code to see your changes or fielding requests from Product Managers or QA for special environments to view and interact with the features that have been implemented. Deployment Previews append the preview URL directly to the PR allowing them to take part in the review directly instead of waiting.

  • This is a first look at a family of Deployment Preview features in coming releases. We’re looking for design partners for feedback as we round out its capabilities. Please get in touch with us so that we can build it together!

As we reflect back over the past nine years and how the landscape of cloud native development has changed, we believe that making it easier to work with the tools you love and trust, the technologies that you’re building on top of, and easing collaboration with your teammates are the foundations — the flagstones — of the workflow for the next decade.
